Be Prepared

Inspecting car damage after a crash

Download a copy our Accident Report Form to ensure you’re prepared in case of an accident, and keep a copy of the form and a pen in your glovebox at all times. If you’re involved in an accident, this form will help remind you what information should be collected in the event of an incident.

In the Event of an Accident

Accidents are highly stressful situations. That is why it’s important to try your best to remain calm. If you are in an accident, take your time to follow these important steps:

  • Call 911 for an ambulance if one is required

  • Exchange information with all parties involved in the accident:

    • First and last names
    • Driver license numbers
    • Insurance company names and policy numbers
    • Vehicle make/model/year/license plate number
    • Telephone numbers
  • Get names and telephone numbers of any independent witnesses to the accident

  • If the property damage exceeds $2,000, you must report the accident to a collision reporting centre

  • You must call the police if:

    • Someone has been injured or killed in the accident
    • The accident resulted from a criminal activity (such as impaired driving)
    • If:
      • Any driver involved has no insurance or does not have a valid licence
      • The accident involved a pedestrian or a person on a bicycle
      • Any driver refuses to exchange information (i.e. driver license and insurance information)
  • Take photos, if possible
