Summer is a great time to get away from hectic city life to enjoy the best of Ontario’s beaches and trails. If you’re looking for fresh ideas for quick trips from the Greater Toronto Area, we have you covered with 5 of our favourite day trips in Southern Ontario.

Location: Hamilton, Ontario
People are often surprised to hear that Hamilton is considered The Waterfall Capital of the World. Home to over 100 waterfalls, it’s the perfect spot for a day trip to enjoy a hike and picnic with friends.
The Spencer Gorge area of Hamilton is home to two of the city’s most impressive waterfalls, Webster’s and Tews falls. Webster’s Falls is a 25 metre high picturesque tiered waterfall perfect for a date or catching up with a friend. Tews falls, at just a few metres less than Niagara Falls, stands at awe-inspiring 41 metres. Enjoy a hike along the trails around each waterfall and lounge in the sun for a picnic at the top of Webster’s falls. Don’t forget to pack your camera!

Location: Elora, Ontario
An inner tube ride down the Elora Gorge river is a must-do for thrill-seeking adventurers. Just under 2 hours from Toronto, the Elora Gorge is one of the Grand River Area’s best-loved destinations. Rental tubes and safety equipment are available for rent and there is a shuttle available to make getting back to your vehicle easy. While tubing, enjoy the scenery of the beautiful forest and towering limestone cliffs along the edge of the flowing river. In addition to a thrilling tube ride, visitors can enjoy swimming at the nearby Elora Gorge Quarry. The quarry features a sandy beach encased in beautiful limestone cliffs.

Location: Norfolk County, Ontario
A popular destination for families, sunbathers and motorcycle enthusiasts, Port Dover is a small town nestled along a large sandy beach. Full of vibrant boutiques and restaurants, Port Dover is a great spot to visit when you’re in the mood for an upbeat afternoon in the sun. You can enjoy the warm water along the vast, clean beach followed by a walk out onto the pier to catch a great view of the lake. You can also catch fisherman trying their luck at the end of the pier. Farmer’s markets in town and along the drive are also a great opportunity to grab fresh groceries before heading home.

The Niagara Glen is a beautiful conservation area down river from bright lights and busy stress of Niagara Falls. The perfect destination for a hike with friends, the Glen features 4 kms of trails through beautiful rock formations along the river’s edge. Along the trails you’ll see a variety of plant species, birds and even rock climbers. Pack a snack and enjoy the view from one of the many giant boulders nestled along the river bed. Finish the day with a BBQ at the top of the headwall or a dinner in the heart of Niagara Falls.

Long Point Provincial Park has become an increasingly popular destination for people from the GTA. It’s the perfect spot to escape the heat of the summer and enjoy a day at the beach. At just over 2 hours from Toronto, Long Point is a great day trip or weekend destination.
Considered one of Ontario’s hidden gems, Long Point is home to a pristine beach that spans nearly 2 kilometers. The warm water of Lake Erie features sandbars which are perfect for testing your skimboarding skills. Long Point is home to beautiful marshlands teeming with wildlife. After the beach, enjoy a treat from the local ice cream spot and head to the marsh for a relaxing canoe trip.
