You may need to complete a car insurance claim if you have been involved in an accident causing injury or damage to your vehicle. You may also make a claim if you have been the victim of vehicle theft.
The claims process can be confusing and frustrating. Handling your claim quickly and effectively can minimize stress and the time it takes you get back on the road. Therefore, to help you make your claim, this article outlines the important information you will need to make an insurance claim.
Accidents are highly stressful situations and this is especially true if an injury occurs. As a result, it is easy to forget the important information you must gather for your insurance claim when an accident occurs. Once it is safe to do so, you need to gather as much information as possible about the accident.
We have created an Accident Information Form to help you record information in the event of an accident. Print out the Accident Report Form and keep a copy of the form in your vehicle’s glove compartment along with a pen. As a precaution, if you are involved in an accident, use the form to gather information and take photos before you contact your insurance provider.
It is important to avoid admitting fault at the scene of the incident. Any admission of fault can affect the outcome of your insurance claim. Rather than attempting to establish fault, stick to documenting the facts.
Read your insurance policy in detail. Be sure you understand your responsibilities and what is covered under your policy. For example, if you have purchased Accident Forgiveness, your insurance rates may be protected in the event of your first at-fault accident.
Don’t wait to file your claim. Filing your claim late can result in a denial of your claim. Therefore, be sure to file your report with your insurance company within 7 days of the incident occurring.

If you need to make a claim outside of our office hours, please report the claim directly to your insurance company. You can find your insurance company’s name on your pink liability slip.
An insurance claims adjuster from your insurance provider will determine fault after they have reviewed your claim. According to the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, “Insurance adjusters investigate insurance claims and determine the amount of loss or damages covered by property and casualty insurance policies.”
The adjuster assigned to your claim will review all details of the incident. The adjuster may visit the location of the accident, interview you and the other drivers involved, any police officers involved or hospital records, if applicable. After gathering all information, the insurance adjuster will use the Fault Determination Rules established by the Insurance Act. Using these rules, the adjuster will determine what percent fault each driver is responsible for.
If you are at fault in anyway, you will have an at fault accident on your insurance record. However, this does not automatically result in insurance increases. If you are not at more fault than 25% during the accident, your insurance premium may not change. Also, many insurance providers do not penalize drivers for their first at fault accident.
You can apply for compensation for damage to your vehicle or personal belongings in the event of an accident. If you have filed a damage claim, the amount you will receive depends on your fault determination and your insurance coverage. Your claims adjuster will confirm the amount you will receive and any deductible payment required. However, you will not need to pay a deductible if you are at zero fault.
You or any of your passengers that have suffered an injury in the accident may qualify to receive Statutory Accident Benefits compensation. Ask your claims adjuster for details on how to apply for these benefits.
