Ontario Police crack down to E.R.A.S.E Street Racing

Wednesday May 3, 2017

Ontario police have just relaunched ERASE, an annual campaign against street racing. The OPP launched the ERASE campaign in partnership with the Government of Ontario.  Its mandate is to unite police officers across the province to “Eliminate Racing Activity On Streets Everywhere”. Police are on the lookout for any activity related to street racing or stunt driving on Ontario roads and Highways.

Street Racing is on the Rise

The Ontario Provincial Police have seen an increase in street racing and stunt driving activity. This increase is emphasized when the warmer weather arrives throughout the province. ERASE aims to proactively prevent this behaviour in order to keep roads safer for all drivers. To patrol for this illegal activity, Ontario Police officers use regular and unmarked ground vehicles or helicopters.

The program originally launched in 1996 as a collaboration between a few departments but has since grown to include Police Services across Ontario. ERASE was relaunched in April, 2017. The campaign was responsible for capturing a group of illegal street racers on highway 400 last year. Several high-end vehicles were impounded and the drivers received seven-day license suspensions.

Dangerous Driving is a criminal offence. If convicted, you will have a criminal record for life.

Big Penalties for Street Racing

Street racers and stunt drivers not only put others at risk but, they can also face serious charges, license suspensions and even jail time.

Dangerous Driving can result in fines of up to $10,000. A conviction also results in a criminal record for the rest of your life. If convicted, you will be labelled a high risk driver and your insurance premiums will be affected for a minimum of at least five years. You can face a suspension from driving for up to 10 years for a second Dangerous Driving offence.

You can also face a Dangerous Driving conviction when operating a boat or off-road vehicle. Be aware of the rules when you’re on the water this summer.

The best way to keep your driving record clean and your insurance rates low is to follow the rules.

If you have a need for speed, you can take your lead foot to a race track where you can test your skills in a venue that’s safer for everyone. There are race tracks across Ontario including Shannonville’s Motorsport Park and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Remember, your insurance policy does not cover the use of your vehicle on a race track. Call your broker if you have questions about your coverage.
